This year on Friday, November 10th the VFW Post 1760 and our Marine veteran contingent held their annual Marine Corps Birthday Celebration commemorating 242 years of service to the United States of America. There was much to enjoy with VFW Post 1760 Commander Jesse Chitwood (USMC) reprising his role as the master of ceremonies.
Highlights of the ceremony included the USMC Birthday message from the Commandant of the Marine Corps, some history of the USMC shared, singing of the Marine Corps Hymn, and the ceremonial cutting of the USMC Birthday cake. The cake part of the ceremony included the first piece given to the guest of honor Thomas ‘Roc’ Rothchild, followed by the next piece given by the oldest to the youngest Marine present symbolizing the experience and the youthful spirit that are hallmarks of the USMC. This year the oldest Marine present was Jim Farquharson, enlisted in the USMC on October 4th, 1960. The youngest Marine present was Vanessa McCarthy, enlisted in June 2000. This passing of the cake from the oldest to the youngest symbolizes the passing of history and traditions to the next generation.
Another notable guest this year was the Texas VFW State Judge Advocate Grant Seabolt from VFW Post 8913 (Lancaster, Texas), with much appreciation for his attendance.
The conclusion of the ceremony was followed by an open potluck for all patrons followed by many toasts and stories shared among Marine veterans.
